Card. Antonblli. Rome, Dec. 8, 1864. Now we would entreat our friendly opponents to consider, whether the wording of this letter is consistent with their hypothesis. You are to choose between two alternative suppositions. Did the Pope issue the Syllabus for the purpose of pronouncing, on some of the denounced errors, a more authoritative and irreformable condemnation than they had hitherto received? Or did he issue it merely in order that the condemnation, which had already been pronounced, might become more generally known and more distinctly understood? The Cardinal's words seem to us really as plain as any words can possibly be, in favour of the latter alternative. Then further. The first sentence of Card. Antonelli's letter is taken word for word from the " Quanta cura." When therefore in that Encyclical Pius IX. declares that, from the very commencement of his Pontificate, " in many published Encyclical Letters and Consistorial Allocutions and other Apostolic Letters," he had "condemned the chief errors of this our most unhappy age,"--there can be no possible doubt that the various Acts to which he refers are those very pronouncements from which the Syllabus is compiled. But what does he say of these Acts in the "Quanta cura"? He parallels them in character to those "most wise Letters and Constitutions," whereby his various predecessors "unveiled and condemned heresies and errors... adverse to our Divine Faith, to the doctrine of the Catholic Church, to purity of morals, and to the eternal...
